Adapt the exuberant Bloomsbury style of Charleston farmhouse to bring touches of bohemian colour and pattern into your home
For over 50 years, from 1916 onwards, Charleston, a farmhouse on the South Downs in East Sussex, was the country meeting place of the Bloomsbury Group – a close-knit circle of artists, writers and intellectuals. Artists Vanessa Bell and Duncan Grant set about enlivening the dark, old interior by painting and adorning every surface with enchanting, naive graphics and striking, country-influenced images. Inspired by this unique decorative style, we have come up with our own interpretations of their distinctive designs on the following pages.
Living room
Be adventurous with colour and pattern – choose hues and shades from within the same tonal range to tie clashing designs together. Walls painted in neutral shades will allow these colours to stand out without overpoweringthe room. Add an extra dimension by painting a decorative detail onto a piece of furniture or, in this case, the fire surround. Here, it has been done freehand using an assortment of tester pots of paint, but a similar effect could be achieved with stencils or by tracing shapes such as lids and bottle tops.
Hallway
Balance a bold pattern in a small hallway by painting the area below the dado rail with a soft wash in a toning shade. Here, we sponged the paisley motif onto the walls with a stencil, and added a flower detail for extra effect.
Workroom
An attic study is the perfect place to experiment with colour in your home. The strong shade of blue used for the exposed brickwork on this wall has been toned down by the slightly paler shade chosen for the recess area. Lighter-hued furniture and accessories, with bright accents of mustard yellow and rust red, help to create a welcoming and relaxed work space. A woven floor runner with a distinctive pattern that picks up on the stepped outline of the brickwork adds depth and originality to the room.
Bedroom
Emphasise the colours of furnishings and accessories in a bedroom by echoing their shades in a bold band painted around the top and side edges of a plain wall. Delicate freehand painting on the wooden bedframe in toning hues will continue the theme and add an individual touch. If you don't feel confident enough to paint a design completely freehand onto the bed, use a stencil for the central motif and then add a few flourishes yourself for an original finish – remember any mistakes can easily be painted over.
Kitchen
Add interest to a white kitchen with a graphic, statement wallpaper above a plain, tiled area. Carry the colours through the room with accessories and china in a mix of vivid shades.
